Why Cleveland Was Built for the WNBA

The return of professional women's basketball brings a new era of passion, pride and community to The Land.

Twenty years after the Cleveland Rockers played their final game, professional women's basketball is back in The Land. The arrival of the Cleveland Sirens marks a new era for one of the fastest-growing leagues in sports and gives one of the country's most passionate fan bases another team to rally behind.

In Cleveland, sports have always been about more than what happens on the court. They bring neighborhoods together, turn strangers into friends and give visitors a front-row seat to the pride that defines this city. The Sirens add a fresh chapter to that story, inviting a new generation of fans to experience Cleveland through the energy of game day, the spirit of community and the people who make The Land unlike anywhere else.

Meet the Cleveland Sirens

Cleveland has already started showing up for the Sirens. Long before the team had a name, logo or roster, more than 5,000 fans had already placed season ticket deposits, eager to be part of the newest chapter in Cleveland sports. If you've ever wondered how seriously we take sports, there's your answer. Around here, a new team means new traditions, new memories and another way to be part of something bigger. Whether you're a lifelong fan or planning your first trip, there's always room for one more fan in the stands.

We’re True, Not New to This

The Cleveland Sirens may be new, but women's basketball isn't. Cleveland helped launch the WNBA with the original Rockers in 1997, and the city's connection to the game has only grown since. From the NCAA Women's Final Four at Rocket Arena to Cleveland State women's basketball and girls leagues filling gyms across Northeast Ohio, the foundation has been here all along. And with the Cleveland Astra set to kick off its inaugural season in 2027, the momentum behind women's sports in The Land continues to grow. The Sirens aren't starting from scratch. They're building on a legacy that's ready for its next chapter.

Cleveland Shows Up

Some cities have fans. Cleveland has family.

Here, Opening Day feels like a holiday. Sundays in the fall revolve around football. A playoff run can turn an ordinary weeknight into something unforgettable. It doesn't matter whether it's basketball, baseball, football or hockey. When there's a game, the gear is on and the whole city leans in.

The Sirens will become part of that tradition from day one. Expect packed restaurants before tipoff, conversations with strangers in line for a beer and an arena full of fans who cheer like they've been doing it for years. That's the beauty of being here. You don't have to know every rule or memorize the roster to feel like you belong.

We Hear the Call

The name "Sirens" couldn't be more fitting. Cleveland isn't just a waterfront city. Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River shape everything from the skyline to the neighborhoods, the restaurants and the way people spend a summer afternoon.

Before tipoff, stroll North Coast Harbor, catch sunset at Voinovich Bicentennial Park or grab dinner overlooking the Cuyahoga River in The Flats. If you're turning game day into a weekend getaway, spend a morning at Edgewater Beach, paddle the river or hop aboard the Goodtime III for a different perspective of the city. If the waterfront is calling your name, these 8 ways to get on the water in Cleveland has you covered.

By the time you make your way to Rocket Arena, you'll understand why Cleveland's waterfront isn't just a backdrop. It's part of the city's identity.

A City Powered by Women

The Sirens are joining a city where women are already making an impact every day. Start your morning with coffee at Ready Set Coffee, grab breakfast or lunch at Kafe LA or The Roaming Biscuit, recharge with a smoothie from Juicy Vegan after a class at NuLife Fitness Camp or treat yourself at The Beauty Room. That's just a glimpse into the many women-owned businesses helping shape The Land.

The Cleveland Sirens are bringing new energy to The Land, and this is only the beginning. We'll see you at Rocket Arena.
