8 Ways to get on the Water in Cleveland

Discover the best ways to enjoy Cleveland’s waterfront, from kayaking the Cuyahoga River and cruising Lake Erie to paddleboarding, fishing, parasailing and relaxing at the beach.

When the summer heat turns up, there’s no better place to cool down than on Cleveland’s waterfront.

Fortunately, getting on the water in The Land is easier than you might think. With miles of shoreline, a winding river and plenty of ways to explore them both, our city was practically built for summer on the water. Whether you’re paddling, cruising or simply taking a dip, these water adventures make it easy to dive in and make the most of the season.

Kayak the Cuyahoga

The skyline hits a little differently when you’re floating beneath it. Kayaking through the twisting Cuyahoga puts you at eye level with the city’s working river, where old industrial structures share the shoreline with wildlife and graffiti murals.

Rent a kayak from Great Lakes Watersports and drop right in the heart of the flats. Best for photographers, urban explorers and adventure seekers, you’ll paddle under bridges, around bends and past boats of every size. Have your own kayak? Merwin's Wharf provides a convenient launch point.

Time your trip right, and some nights you’ll hear the echoes of live music at Jacob’s Pavillion.

Fly above Lake Erie

What if the best view of Cleveland is 400 feet above the water?

Great Lakes Watersports offers parasailing flights that lift riders high above Lake Erie for seagull’s-eye views of the city below, an expansive shoreline and wide-open waters. For the thrill-seekers and bucket list checkers, the 8–10-minute flight usually includes an opportunity to have your feet dipped in the water before returning to the boat. Bring quick-drying clothes or a swimsuit, shoes that won’t fall off, and a thirst for adventure.

Reel in a Walleye on a Fishing Charter

Lake Erie has earned its reputation as “Walleye Capital of the World,” making a fishing charter a worthwhile way to spend a day on the water. Based in Downtown Cleveland, Midtown Fishing Charters offers private trips out on the Lake with experts guiding first-timers and seasoned anglers alike to prime fishing grounds for walleye, steelhead and yellow perch.

Before you set sail, anyone over the age of 16 will need an Ohio fishing license. An adventure on the Lake comes with a mix of sunshine, wind and fluctuating temperatures, so having an extra layer on hand can help keep you comfortable while you’re patiently awaiting the next bite. And don’t forget a cooler for your catch. Each angler can return to shore with up to six walleyes a day, which makes it easy to bring home a taste of Lake Erie — straight from the source.

Dine, Dance and Cruise

For those who believe a meal tastes better on the move, Cleveland’s dinner cruises deliver.

Next date night, step on board the Goodtime III for a waterfront voyage through the Cuyahoga River, The Flats and Lake Erie. Between sailing historic industrial landmarks and open waters with a new perspective of the city’s silhouette, there’s plenty to take in while dining, dancing and drinking. It’s remained one of The Land’s favorite ways to experience the waterfront for decades — and for good reason.

For a fresh take on hospitality on the water, Cleveland’s newest luxury lake vessel the Lady Caroline pairs sightseeing with brunch, lunch and dinner cruises. With four decks, multiple dance floors and stunning views at every turn, you’ll experience a touch of yacht life right on Lake Erie.

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply soaking up every moment of Cleveland’s summer season, you’ll step back onto shore with a fresh perspective and a full belly.

Take a Dip

There’s nothing quite like diving into the cool waters of Lake Erie on a hot summer day. After all, sometimes the most enjoyable waterfront experiences are also the simplest.

For easy access to get your toes in the sand, make your way down to Edgewater Beach. With sunny stretches of wide-open water, skyline views and a community feel unique to The Land, this locally favored part of Cleveland’s coast offers up all the ingredients for a perfect beach day for swimmers, shoreline strollers and anyone looking for a classic summer outing.

After working up an appetite between splashing and sunbathing, treat yourself to an ice cream cone, fresh-off-the-grill hot dog or well-earned cocktail at Edgewater Beach House's bar and concessions. Stroll down the pier as the sun sets over the lake while taking in skyline views for a picture-perfect finish to your time on the shore.

Cruise the Cuyahoga on a Floating Tiki Bar or hop on the Water Taxi

For a waterfront experience that’s equal parts sightseeing and socializing, hop aboard Cleveland’s only floating tiki bar with CLE Tiki Barge. This two-hour BYOB cruise winds through the Cuyahoga River and Inner Harbor, serving up skyline views, island vibes and your favorite drinks with good company. Choose a public cruise to meet fellow passengers or book a private charter for groups of 20 to 49. Departing from Main Avenue in The Flats, each boat comes equipped with a bathroom, ice, coolers, a Bluetooth sound system and even a photographer, making it an easy pick for anyone looking to trade the patio for a memorable afternoon on the water.

If you’re already exploring The Flats on foot, keep the adventure going and hop aboard the Cleveland Water Taxi. All-day passes and hop-on, hop-off service make it easy to travel between The Land’s many popular waterfront destinations while enjoying a scenic ride.

Paddleboard on The Land’s Waterways

Paddleboarding offers a different perspective on The Land, trading busy streets for calm waters and cityscapes. Whether you’re just getting your balance or looking for a more challenging workout, Cleveland has launch points for every skill level.

  • Wendy Park at Whiskey Island: A favorite among locals, the protected breakwall creates calm waters that are ideal for beginners and relaxed paddles.
  • Edgewater Park: Paddle in the protected swimming area, where a little more wave action adds an extra challenge alongside swimmers, boaters and personal watercraft.
  • Rocky River Reservation: Wind through wooded waterways surrounded by wildlife for one of Cleveland’s most peaceful paddles.
  • North Coast Harbor Marina: Launch behind the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for calm water and unbeatable skyline views.
  • Merwin’s Wharf: Paddle the Cuyahoga River through The Flats, where natural scenery meets Cleveland’s iconic working river.

Make Waves on a Jet Ski

Craving speed just as much as sunshine? Hopping on a jet ski is without a doubt one of the most exciting ways to spend time on Cleveland’s freshwater playground. Hit the gas and feel the cool mist of Lake Erie’s open water in your face or weave your way through the Cuyahoga River. Great Lakes Watersports offers guided jet ski expeditions and hourly rentals, making it easy to get out on the water and discover why your bold spirit feels right at home in The Land.

In The Land, there’s plenty of places for thrill seeking jet ski owners to discover the CLE waterfront’s special brand of adrenaline:

  • Edgewater Park and Marina
  • East 55th Street Marina
  • Gordon Park Boat Launch
  • North Coast Harbor
