Cuyahoga River Development

Waterfront development in Cleveland, OH

The Riverfront Cleveland Project

Downtown Cleveland

Riverfront Cleveland is a transformational mixed-use development reimagining 35 acres of underutilized land and the historic Tower City Center along the Cuyahoga River. The 3.5 million-square-foot master plan includes 12 acres of publicly accessible space with a riverwalk, plazas, trails, open areas, and waterfront access offering year-round activities. Already underway, the Cleveland Clinic Global Peak Performance Center will open in 2027 as the new Cleveland Cavaliers practice facility. Spanning more than 210,000 square feet, it will be among the largest and most advanced training and performance complexes in the world.

Irishtown Bend Park Project

Ohio City Neighborhood

This generational 25-acre project will connect downtown and Cleveland neighborhoods to the Cuyahoga River, Lake Erie and beyond, bringing together people, nature, industry and history in an inclusive, accessible green space that preserves riverfront land and enhances community health. A multipurpose trail will provide the missing link between the 101-mile Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail and Lake Erie. Accessible through Ohio City and overlooking downtown’s Columbus Peninsula, hillside stabilization is nearly complete, with trail construction beginning in spring 2026 and Irishtown Bend Park features added in subsequent years. The trail is expected to be completed in 2027, with the park following in 2029.

Partners: LAND Studio, Cleveland Metroparks, City of Cleveland, Cleveland City Council, CleanOhio, Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority, Cuyahoga County, Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation, Northeast Ohio Area Coordinating Agency, Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, Ohio City Inc., Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Ohio Department of Transportation, Port of Cleveland, State of Ohio, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, West Creek Conservancy.

Canal Basin Park Project

Downtown, Columbus Peninsula

Canal Basin Park is envisioned as a 22-acre park and trailhead honoring the hand-dug waterway that once linked Lake Erie to the Ohio River and the national economy. Located at the northern terminus of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, the park sits at the historic site where the canal met the Cuyahoga River in 1832, with Cleveland’s only remaining canal remnants still visible today. Once completed, the park will serve as a gathering place, interpretive space and connective hub, featuring a Cuyahoga River-themed playground, boardwalk, greenspaces and a central basin designed to capture, filter and slowly release stormwater runoff. The project is expected to be completed in 2028.

Partners: Canalway Partners, City of Cleveland, Cleveland City Council, Cleveland Metroparks, Cuyahoga County, Downtown Cleveland.

Thunderbird Project

Downtown, Scranton Peninsula

Surrounded on three sides by the Cuyahoga River, the 42-acre Scranton Peninsula is a downtown Cleveland waterfront district accessible by road, rail and ferry. Designed for the next 100 years, it features authentic, intimate spaces, timeless yet aspirational architecture, engaging pedestrian corridors, and a multimodal riverside trail and public park. BrewDog Cleveland opened an outpost on the peninsula in 2021 in a 103-year-old building that also houses MassMutual. In 2025, two residential developments — The Collins and Triton at The Flats — opened, adding a combined 609 high-end rental units.
