Glenville is Where Black History, Community and Innovation Shape Cleveland

Historic landmarks, local restaurants and community change makers make Glenville a neighborhood wort

Jala Forest September 08, 2026

Glenville is one of Cleveland's most influential neighborhoods. From Superman's birthplace to Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Rise Up!" speech at Glenville High School, Glenville has played a defining role in Cleveland's story. Today, that legacy lives on through neighborhood leaders, entrepreneurs and organizations investing in people, culture and community. Whether you're exploring Black history in Cleveland or looking to experience one of the city's most influential neighborhoods, Glenville proves that great communities don't just preserve history, they keep building on it.

Where Leaders Rise

Originally home to many Jewish families in the early 1900s, it later became a thriving center of Black culture, entrepreneurship and community leadership as thousands of African Americans made Cleveland home during the Great Migration. Glenville High School has educated Cleveland students for more than a century, but one of its most recognizable traditions might be its mascot: the Tarblooder. Inspired by Cleveland's industrial roots, where factory workers returned home covered in tar, the Tarblooder represents the grit and resilience that still define the neighborhood today. Honestly, only in Cleveland could a tar-bleeding robot become a beloved mascot.

That same spirit was on display on April 26, 1967, when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "Rise Up!" speech to students at Glenville High School, encouraging them to get involved in the civil rights movement and support Black political leadership. Just months later, Cleveland elected Carl Stokes as the first Black mayor of a major U.S. city, cementing the Cleveland's place in American history. More than 50 years later, Glenville continues to produce leaders who are shaping Cleveland's future.

Preserving the Past and Building the Future

In the heart of the Glenville neighborhood, ThirdSpace Action Lab serves as a hub for creativity and radical imagination, igniting new possibilities in a community that's never waited for permission to innovate. ThirdSpace Action Lab is helping Glenville imagine what's next. The grassroots organization works alongside residents to preserve neighborhood history while developing community-led solutions to racial and economic inequities affecting Cleveland's Black neighborhoods.

Projects like Chocolate City Cleveland bring that mission to life. Using interactive maps, public art and community gatherings, the multimedia project preserves the stories of Cleveland's East Side while inspiring new conversations about the neighborhood's future.

Neighbors Who Care

Once known as GlenVillage, Flava Neighbor is a restaurant development house that works with established chefs and restauranteurs, offering microlocations to help them scale their businesses. Created by Jeremy McBryde, founder of Glenville's favorite soul food restaurant ComfortCLE, Flava Neighbor goes beyond just food. It fuels local entrepreneurship in a neighborhood that’s no stranger to building from the ground up. McBryde launched the original ComfortCLE concept in Los Angeles’ Skid Row, focusing on bringing quality meals to underserved communities.

Now McBryde is putting down even deeper roots in Glenville. This incubator supports community building through engagement programs such as Wing It, a book club where neighborhood kids are assigned a book to read and write a summary about what they learned. It's a reflection of what Clevelanders have always known: We don't wait for change. We make it happen.

“ComfortCLE is bigger than the restaurant,” said McBryde. “Every community that we’ve gone [to], from Skid Row to Inglewood, California, to Carson, California – we've created something that the community can get behind, something that the community can also benefit from.”
