Karamu House: The Cleveland Theater That Helped Shape Black Arts in America

Jala Forest September 08, 2026

Long before Black stories were celebrated on stages across the country, they were being told at Karamu House. Located in Cleveland's Fairfax neighborhood, the oldest producing Black theater in the United States has spent more than a century amplifying Black voices through theater, education and community. From launching legendary artists to inspiring the next generation of performers, Karamu House continues to prove that Cleveland's creative influence reaches far beyond city limits.

Recognized as a Cleveland landmark, listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and featured in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, Karamu House’s impact continues to reach audiences far beyond Northeast Ohio.

The Stage That Launched Legends

Founded in 1915 by Russel and Rowena Jellife, Karamu House began as an interracial settlement house that used theater and the arts to bring people together during segregation. Karamu broke racial barriers and became a creative home by providing a creative outlet for Black artists and amplifying Black voices at a time when those opportunities were rare.

Karamu House helped launch the careers of some of the most influential names in American arts and literature. Poet and playwright Langston Hughes wrote his first play, The Golden Place, there in 1921 before returning to debut several more works throughout the 1930s. Other notable alumni include Zora Neale Hurston, actors Ruby Dee and Robert Guillaume, and playwrights Ossie Davis and Lorraine Hansberry. After all, Cleveland has a knack for turning neighborhood talent into national icons.

Karamu’s influence extended well beyond the stage. During the Harlem Renaissance, its printmaking workshop gave Black artists the space and resources to create, helping establish Karamu Artists Inc. and launching nationally recognized artists like Hughie Lee-Smith, Charles Salée, Elmer W. Brown and William E. Smith.

That legacy continues today. Karamu alumni include James Pickens Jr., Imani Hakim and Grammy-winning singer Durand Bernarr, proving the theater remains a launching pad for the next generation of artists.

The Legacy Continues

Karamu House continues to invest in future generations through the Karamu Arts Academy, where children and adults train in theatre, music, dance and vocal performance. School partnerships and community workshops also introduce new audiences to Karamu's history while helping young artists build the confidence to take center stage.

While Karamu's roots remain firmly planted in Fairfax, its influence stretches across Cleveland and beyond. Whether you're attending a performance, exploring its history or supporting the next generation of artists, a visit to Karamu House is a chance to experience a living legacy that continues to shape Black arts and culture today.
