Answering those burning questions we all have about Cleveland

Legends of The Land Podcast

This is Legends of The Land, a podcast series that centers on some of those absolutely burning questions we all have about Cleveland — the kind of stuff no one is talking about – but probably should.

Cleveland’s Stockyards

South by Southwest

Where in the world?

Just a ten-minute drive from Downtown Cleveland — and with the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood directly to the north — the Stockyards is never far from the action. Convenient access to I-71 makes it easy to see the sights.

At the Crossroads

Plenty of fun things in stock

Celebrate a bit of local history at the site of Brookside Stadium in the neighborhood’s southeast corner. This natural amphitheater, located in the small part of Brookside Reservation that peeks up into the Stockyards, was once an amateur sports hotspot. Cleveland was a sports town from the very start. Back in 1915, the park smashed attendance records with a crowd of 115,000 for an amateur baseball championship. The community hopes to someday redevelop Brookside Stadium in honor of its proud past.

The rest of Brookside Reservation, in all her natural splendor and beauty, lies just a short walk to the south. On the other end of the neighborhood, the Michael Zone Recreation Center sits a small distance outside the northern borders.

Named for the Cleveland Union Stockyards (closed decades ago), the Stockyards neighborhood refuses to get stuck in the past. But this predominantly residential neighborhood – with a proud immigrant heritage – will never forget its roots.

The spirit of the Stockyards calls residents to welcome the most vulnerable among us. Natividad Pagan International Newcomers Academy – recently renamed to honor a beloved educator who went above and beyond in service to her students – opens its arms with a special focus on newly arrived immigrants speaking little to no English. The school inspired the Stockyards to convert and renovate vacant lots and unused spaces into new homes for the immigrant community.

Much like these newcomers, the neighborhood itself continues to move forward with eyes fixed firmly on the future.

Grit to Green

Take a look at the yards

The neighborhood’s gritty industrial vibe — with architecture influenced by the diverse cultures of past residents and rows of homes built for stockyards workers — gives way to shoots of green in Brookside Reservation and West Park Cemetery.
