Free in The Land: The Holidays

Free Things to Do in Cleveland Around the Holidays

Kevin Carpenter November 11, 2024

This may be the most wonderful time of the year, but not so much for our wallets. All those presents, ugly holiday sweaters and jelly-of-the-month subscriptions can really add up. Hoping to celebrate the season in Cleveland without having to sell your house in exchange for an RV (e.g. Cousin Eddie)? We’ve got you covered.

Tree Lighting Ceremony | Nov. 23

Kick off the holiday season with a dazzling Tree Lighting Ceremony at Wade Oval. This memorable evening will feature live music, festive activities and the grand illumination of a 30-foot Christmas tree, synchronized with a custom light show set to an original score. This free event is open to the public, so bring your family and friends to enjoy the first glimpse of Illuminate the Circle. It’s the perfect way to start the season.

Holiday Lights on Public Square | Begins Nov. 30

Can’t make it to the lighting ceremony at WinterLand? Never fear. These 500,000+ holiday lights dazzle all season long. Trust us, Cleveland’s Public Square has never looked better — or brighter. Stop by for a stroll through the lights or jump out on the ice at the Square’s skating rink. It’s a true winter wonderland. And, of course, if you’re too afraid of the chilly temps, then head inside to Tower City Center to scope the massive Christmas tree or hit the holiday pop-up bar in JACK Cleveland Casino..

Rockefeller Park Greenhouse

Some of the most beautiful — and colorful — holiday decorations have nothing to do with lights. Nature puts on her own dazzling display with thousands of poinsettias inside this lush Glenville neighborhood greenhouse. Need some calm and quiet during this cray Christmas season? Then step inside for a holiday scene like no other. Don’t forget your camera.

Light Up Lakewood | Dec. 7

Lakewood knows how to party. Join 20,000+ other merrymakers for food trucks, live music, Roundstone Beer Garden, Holiday Parade, caroling and even more holiday hijinks. Don’t miss the Indoor Holiday Market to get a start on your seasonal shopping. Oh, and did we mention the winter fireworks? Your night will end with a bang.

Queer The Halls | Dec. 7

Queer the Halls returns this year, bigger and better than before! This beloved annual event at the LGBT Community Center is expanding to Near West Theater to welcome even more guests. Expect a full day of holiday cheer, local shopping, queer pride, and community bonding. After the event, head to one of the fantastic nearby restaurants for dinner and drinks, then cozy up with a movie at the historic Capitol Theatre to end your evening on a high note.
