11 Unmissable Things to Do in Cleveland for International Visitors

Award-winning Irish journalist Ed Finn has roamed the globe, and his latest adventure brought him right to Cleveland in the latest episode of "Ed Finn's America." As he scoured our fair city for its finest spots, we took notes. So, if you’re ready to take a trip across the pond, here are Ed’s top picks (and some of our own) to make your trip to the shining shore of Lake Erie as legendary as his own.

Arts and Culture

Cleveland might be where rock ‘n’ roll found its name — and yes, we take our sports very seriously. But there’s more to the city than guitar solos and game-day chants. We’re passionate about world-class arts and culture, too. From this season’s lineup of Broadway shows at Playhouse Square to the Cleveland Museum of Art, which hosts large exhibits like “Takashi Murakami: Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow,” here are a few ways to experience Cleveland’s cultural side.

Playhouse Square

Playhouse Square – the largest performing arts center outside of New York – is the beating heart of Cleveland's performing arts scene, offering unforgettable experiences in a beautifully restored, historic setting. From Broadway hits to local, independent performances, each show brings entertainment that’ll leave you buzzing. And don’t miss the largest outdoor chandelier in North America casting its dazzling glow over the theaters below.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a music lover's paradise, packed with legendary guitars, outfits and epic stories. Cleveland earned its spot as the Rock Hall's home due in part to local DJ Alan Freed, who coined the term "rock 'n' roll" in the 1950s. Whether you're jamming in The Garage exhibit or geeking out over rock history, you're in the city where it all started — and yes, your air-guitar moves are totally welcome.

Cleveland Museum of Art

The Cleveland Museum of Art (one of the top museums in the country according to the Washington Post) is home to an extensive collection that spans centuries. It’s perfect for a leisurely stroll through history, and with free admission, you can soak up everything from classic masterpieces to modern art without breaking the bank.

Cleveland Museum of Natural History

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is a wonderland for the curious, showcasing everything from giant dinosaur skeletons to dazzling gems. With hands-on exhibits and fascinating artifacts, it's perfect for visitors of all ages from around the world.

Eat & Drink

Hope you packed your appetite — and your stretchy pants — because Cleveland’s food scene is going to put both to the test. While here, you can taste your way around the world at the West Side Market, indulge in dishes from James Beard–nominated chefs and see how American craft beer measures up to your standards.

West Side Market

Cleveland's delicious hub for all things fresh and flavorful, the only thing better than the food is the vibrant atmosphere at this historic, European-style market. With over 50 vendors offering everything from farm-fresh produce to mouthwatering baked goods, it's a feast for all of your senses.

Market Garden Brewery

The go-to spot for beer lovers and foodies alike, Market Garden Brewery offers delicious bites and a rotating selection of house-made beers that includes hoppy IPAs, rich stouts, pilsners and then some. There's also a beautiful outdoor patio, so grab a pint, kick back and enjoy the good vibes.

Mitchell’s Ice Cream

Mitchell's Ice Cream is a delightful Cleveland staple where each creamy scoop is crafted from fresh, local ingredients. It's the ultimate destination for satisfying your sweet tooth, boasting an ever-changing menu of inventive flavors alongside beloved classics. Plus, you can watch the magic happen with a fully visible ice cream production facility on display, giving you a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the origins of deliciousness.

Sports

Few things in Cleveland hold a candle to our city’s collective sports mania. You can see (and feel) it everywhere — from barstools on Sunday mornings to team stickers adorning the briefcases, lunch pails, laptops and hard hats of street-side passersby. You can’t experience Cleveland without getting in on the passion.

Browns Football

Truth: Cleveland loves sports, but football is king. Through every losing streak and brutal storm, Browns fans decked out in orange and brown pack the stands and streets. The real Cleveland experience is the legendary tailgates in the Municipal lot. Buses decked out in Browns gear, smoky grills and thousands of fans come together to create a truly indescribable experience that your friends back home will never believe.

Outdoors

Mother Nature called. She wants you in Cleveland. And, frankly, so do we. With eight lakefront parks, 18 reservations and over 100 hiking trails of the award-winning Cleveland Metroparks system, there’s plenty of green space to explore, even if you want to stay in the city.

Trails & Tides

From the Cultural Gardens and Lake Erie beaches to 60+ golf courses where you can pretend to be a pro (or just chase your ball), there’s no shortage of outdoor adventures in The Land. If you want to embrace the American wilderness, you can wander the Metroparks’ “Emerald Necklace” — a chain of parks and trails wrapping the city — or explore Cuyahoga Valley National Park’s waterfalls and wildlife.

Cleveland Script Signs

The Cleveland Script Signs are the city's coolest photo ops and are the perfect backdrop to show off your love for The Land. Scattered around iconic spots, these signs give you the chance to strike a pose while taking in the skyline or lake views.

Public Square

Public Square is perfect for people-watching, grabbing a snack, or enjoying some outdoor time. Plus, with all the cool events and live performances, there's always something happening. It's like the city's living room — with fewer couches and more pigeons. Don't forget to check out the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument.

Want to see for yourself?

Of course, we think you should visit The Land and experience these spots in person. That's why we've prepared a resource just for international travelers with all the need-to-know info that, well, you need to know. We can't wait for you to see everything Cleveland has in store for you..
