CLEVELAND (Sept. 7, 2023) – Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated Sept. 15 - Oct. 15, honors the history and contributions of Hispanic culture in the U.S. With celebrations and special events happening throughout the month, Clevelanders have an abundance of options for celebrating local Hispanic influence and culture.
¡Pleibol! (Sept. 8-10): Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations begin early at ¡Pleibol!, an event paying tribute to the profound impact of Black and Latino players on baseball. Games, food and festivities will take place throughout the weekend, culminating with a softball tournament on the field at historic League Park. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Julia de Burgos Cultural Arts Center and the Baseball Heritage Museum.
Cleveland Guardians Hispanic Heritage Night (Sept. 15): The Cleveland Guardians will honor Hispanic heritage of players and fans alike with in-game festivities on Hispanic Heritage Night. Fans who purchase a special ticket package for the Sept. 15 game will receive a limited-edition Hispanic Heritage “C” logo flag. A portion of every special ticket package sold will be donated to a local Hispanic-serving institution.
¡Celebrando! (Sept. 16): Clevelanders looking for a family-friendly way to celebrate won’t want to miss Julia de Burgos Cultural Arts Center’s ¡Celebrando! event on Sept. 16. Attendees can enjoy food, dancing and live performances while honoring Latino heritage, history and art. Clevelanders of Hispanic descent are invited to wear their country’s traditional clothing or flag.
Los Soles Truncos at LatinUS Theater Co. (Sept. 14-Oct. 1): Cleveland is home to LatinUs Theater Company, Ohio’s first independent Latino theater company. The group’s mission is to promote and produce artistic and theatrical works in Spanish, honoring the cultural heritage and traditions of Northeast Ohio’s Latinx population. From Sept. 14 through Oct. 1, the theater company will perform “Los Soles Truncos,” telling the story of three sisters in Puerto Rico. All performances are in Spanish with English supertitles.
Hispanic Heritage Month Workshop (Sept. 22): Future Ink Graphics (FIG), located within the Pivot Center in the Clark-Fulton neighborhood, will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a silkscreen workshop on Sept. 22. Artist Alicia Vasquez will lead participants through the creation of their own silkscreen collage. Afterward, attendees can browse FIG’s gallery – including the show currently on display from Vasquez.
Hispanic Heritage Celebration at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (Sept. 30): Music lovers can gather at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Sept. 30 for a free Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Union Home Mortgage Plaza. The event will feature live music and dance performances all aimed at celebrating the richness of Hispanic culture while highlighting Latin and Hispanic music and art.
Clark-Fulton Art (Any time): Locals and visitors can immerse themselves in Cleveland’s Hispanic culture through art with a visit to the Clark-Fulton neighborhood. Nine new murals celebrating Hispanic heritage were unveiled earlier this year in the neighborhood, which is home to Ohio’s densest Hispanic and Latinx population. The colorful art installations can be found on buildings along West 25th Street near the MetroHealth campus, as well as along Clark Avenue, Fulton Road and at Roberto Clemente Park.
