The Cleveland Orchestra Vasily Petrenko, conductor Behzod Abduraimov, piano ELGAR Cockaigne (“In London Town”) PROKOFIEV Piano Concerto No. 2* WALTON Symphony No. 1 Composer William Walton drew from Beethoven and Sibelius when he set out to write his ambitious Symphony No. 1, and it simmers with "orgiastic power, coruscating malice, sensuous desolation and extroverted swagger," wrote critic Byron Adams at its 1935 premiere. Its ecstatic reception propelled the composer to national fame overnight, and it continues to thrill from explosive opening to rapturous finale. Rising piano virtuoso Behzod Abduraimov leads Prokofiev’s notoriously demanding Second Piano Concerto. *Not included on the Friday matinee (12/2/22) program.
