Blazing Paddles celebrates the Cuyahoga River’s phoenix-like rise from the ashes of the famous 1969 fire that went on to spur a national environmental movement toward conservation of our precious waterfront resources.
Paddleboard, kayak or canoe your way through either the 5.7-mile Ruth Patrick Memorial urban course, which will offer sweeping views of Downtown Cleveland and the unique experience of navigating under 10 bridges spanning the river. When you reach the turnaround point, you’ll be at the location of the 1952 Cuyahoga River fire, where the infamous image that’s often used as a visual stand-in for the much smaller June 22, 1969 fire.
