This series of three virtual programs will ask those who participate to consider how we use history to remember people, places, and events important to our communities. Understanding how monuments are conceived and constructed helps us to confront the stories the monuments tell. What makes a monument effective? What has been memorialized, and why? Are monuments about history, nostalgia, or politics? Are monuments permanent? Clevelanders will be familiar with such monuments as Soldiers and Sailors in Public Square, the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, and Christopher Columbus in Little Italy. These sites and others will be discussed in a series of programs that highlights how and why we learn about history, using resources from the WRHS library and archives and guest speakers from the community. Presenters: Pamela Dorazio Dean, Curator of Italian American History/Director, Italian American Museum of Cleveland; Sean Martin, PhD, Associate Curator of Jewish History Schedule of Topics: Week 1 (6/10): What is a Monument? Week 2 (6/17): Building Memory Week 3 (6/24): The Symbols of History
