Right about now, we could all use some comfort food in our lives. And, nary do comfort foods pack the sugary, carbohydrate-laden loveliness quite like the decadent, always-there-for-you pastries, pies, muffins, cakes and other goodness served up in Cleveland’s bakeries. The closure of Bloom Bakery in Downtown Cleveland last year left a big hole in our hearts, but founding member of Bloom, Logan Fahey, has continued the bakery’s mission and vision with Fahey Bakehouse in the spot of the original Bloom. Not only does the bakery have a wide array of baked goods like house-made croissants, muffins, cakes, artisan breads and other delicious lunch options, the bakehouse hires those with barriers to employment and donates proceeds to Women of Hope, The LGBTQ Center and the Trevor Project. There’s nothing to feel guilty about when indulging in these amazing treats; you’ll also be doing good for your community.
No one can ever say that the folks at Rising Star aren’t serious about their coffee. If you want one of the best espresso drinks you can find in town, hit up one of their five locations, the Downtown version of which is in the Hyatt Regency in the Old Arcade. Roasting their own beans and making a perfect espresso drink are things every barista at Rising Star is passionate about. Many locations also carry local baked goods, like the close-to-utopia rosemary bagels from Cleveland Bagel Co. and the beautifully rich macarons from Butter Cream and Olive Oil. And, trust us, you will not be disappointed by the professional latte art topping your perfect cup of coffee.
Started in the early 1900s and carried on through four generations of the Presti family, this long-standing bakery in Little Italy, located near University Circle on Cleveland’s east side, is a go-to location of classic Italian cookies and pastries, good breads and even some house-made gelato on the remaining warm days of fall. The current pastry chef is the great-grandson of the original owners, and the family has worked tirelessly for over a hundred years to bring you these treats.
Cleveland baking laws allow sales from home kitchens, and that’s where this wonderful East Side bakery got its start — in the kitchen of the owner in 2014. The bakery had so much success that this location opened a few years back and is going strong with delightful pound cakes, peach cobblers and key lime pies. Don’t miss the seasonal sweet potato pie, a must-have for these long fall nights.
Ever see a cake shaped like a taco? That’s just one of the options you’ll have for custom cakes if you walk into KB Confections in Lakewood, located on the west side of Cleveland. Owner and award-winning cake maker Karen Bosworth had a long-standing dream of opening a confectionary, which became a reality in 2014. Though the retail space is closed to everything but take-out orders at the moment, Lakewood eagerly awaits the day that it’s fully open again. In the meantime, you can still place your custom orders for cakes, and pick up curb-side delivery of other confections — you will not be disappointed!
Another wonderful testament to how the Cleveland home baking laws benefit small business owners, the delightfully rockabilly proprietor of Fear’s Confections, Cassandra Fear, started this chocolatier as a home business, and then made the storefront leap in 2013. Featuring an amazing array of caramels, truffles and chocolates (including some “Star Wars” themed goodies), this West Side location was featured by Alton Brown as a top pick in Cleveland a few years back. You can’t argue with that!
