Making the trip to The Land to see the astounding phenomenon that is the Total Solar Eclipse? You’re in for a treat. But before you look up to view this natural wonder, let's look down at this checklist containing everything you need before you start your journey to Cleveland.
Be sure to download the checklist to keep it handy as you prepare.
1. Prepare
Planning for that perfect once-in-a-lifetime experience might seem daunting. But, we're here to make that experience a whole lot easier. Before you leave for The Land, check out this Know Before You Go, chocked full of event information, maps, parking updates and more.
2. Stay in The Know
Thank the stars that you have a guide while making your trip to Cleveland. The Destination Cleveland team will be providing live updates all weekend on our social channels. Be sure to follow our Twitter, Facebook and Instagram channels, so you can be notified of any important updates. And, if you have any questions along the way, be sure to tag us and our team will respond as soon as we can.
3. Get ISO-Compliant Solar Eclipse Glasses
The solar eclipse is totally a sight to see. But, if you’re seeing it, you need to do so wearing the proper protective eyewear. You need to be sure that you have ISO-compliant solar viewers. Be aware that fraudulently marked viewers have been reported during past eclipses. You can find a list of verified vendors here.
4. Listen and Watch for Traffic Updates
Everyone’s making their way to The Land to see this cosmic wonder firsthand. So, the inevitable is bound to happen – traffic. Don’t be in the dark on road conditions. Get live traffic updates supplied by Newsradio WTAM 1100.
5. Arrive Early Stay Late
Want to avoid traffic all together and soak up all The Land has to offer? We recommend arriving early and staying late. Sure, we’re biased. But having a good time in Cleveland is as easy as eclipsing the sun for four minutes causing a total blackout. Anyone can do it. Check out these hotel deals to find a cozy place to stay.
6. Download Maps
Another inevitable situation that occurs when people flock to see something as cool as an eclipse are delays in cell service. Don’t get lost in The Land. Head to our Cleveland Maps page and download or print the relevant maps to make sure you always know where you’re headed.
7. Bring Cash
In the event that internet service is delayed, you may not be able to make purchases using your credit or debit card. Just in case, bring some cash with you.
8. Request an Insiders Guide
In case you’re having trouble getting on the web, you can also download an Official Insiders Guide. This guide is packed with things to do, places to eat and more geared towards visitors of Cleveland. We recommend requesting one 5-7 days before your trip to ensure it makes it to you on time. Request one here.
9. Be Roadtrip Ready
Roadtrips are super fun, but they can also be super long — especially when solar eclipse traffic is involved. Before you start your journey, be sure your car is stocked with snacks, water and, of course, a full tank of gas.
10. Download the CLE Solar Eclipse Playlist on Spotify
Speaking of road trips, what’s a road trip without tunes? We’ve got you covered with a solar eclipse-themed playlist thanks to our friends at #ListenCLE. Start up the car and rock out to some classics from Cleveland and beyond here.
11. Charge Your Phone
While in Cleveland, we just know you’re going to be taking all the photos, rocking out to our eclipse playlist and leaving five stars at every place you visit. That said, that cellular device of yours is going to need some juice for your Cleveland escapades. Make sure you charge it up and bring a portable charging device along for the ride.
12. Have a Family Travel Plan
Whenever you’re traveling, you should always have a plan in place, especially with younger kids. Consider all possibilities when traveling and make sure the whole family is aligned. Be sure to check out our Eclipse Health and Safety guide here.
13. Be Prepared for Any Weather
Cleveland weather is known for being indecisive in spring, which can make packing a little complicated. As always, we recommend sturdy (ideally waterproof) walking shoes and clothes you can layer like jackets, leggings, flannels, gloves and scarves. But don’t forget your aspirational summer gear because sunshine is always just around the corner. Make sense? Thought so. But just in case, head to our friends over at WKYC-TV to get real-time updates and see the 10-Day forecast.
