Everyone wants to feel safe and able to be their best self in their home and out in their community. So, it’s no surprise that these are among the most important things to consider when choosing a new city in which to live and work. Whether it’s our world class health care infrastructure, public safety programs like the Downtown Cleveland Ambassadors or endless opportunities to get outside or find a community to aid in self-care, Cleveland is well-suited to building your life and helping you grow as a person and/or professional.
Cleveland has long been known as a health care destination, anchored by a world-class ecosystem of hospitals:
Cleveland Clinic – Ranked #1 in cardiology, vascular and heart surgery every year since 1994 by US News & World Report. Recently named the #2 hospital in the world by Newsweek.
University Hospitals - Received the industry’s most prestigious honor – the American Hospital Association’s Quest for Quality Prize – in 2022.
MetroHealth - A public health system that serves more than one million patients annually across Northeast Ohio that focuses on whole health, with an aim to improve the foundations of community health and well-being, including affordable housing, a cleaner environment, economic opportunity and access to fresh food.
While our hospitals are providing care to our community every day, they also join with an ever-growing roster of biomedical businesses in the region to innovate the treatments and medical devices of tomorrow.
With a rise in residential population, further development and an increase in visitors, the city of Cleveland has partnered with Downtown Cleveland Inc. to raise its investment in their Clean & Safe Ambassadors program.
Safety ambassadors are citizens trained in de-escalation and security that are assigned to specific patrol routes and discuss safety concerns with business operators, employees and residents. They don’t have guns; just walkie-talkies, a first aid kit and their cellphone. Ambassadors are ready to call in police, firefighters or EMTs at the first sign of emergency. Residents and downtown workers can call them for safety escorts or if they get locked out of their cars.
Ambassadors also serve as hospitality agents who enjoy talking to people, whether it’s sparking a conversation after assisting someone with directions or dining recommendations or intervening with aggressive panhandling or observing and reporting any suspicious activity.
Self-care comes in many forms. You could wander the galleries of the Cleveland Museum of Art endlessly or enjoy a performance of the Cleveland Orchestra. Sit down to creative cuisine you won’t find anywhere else or simply savor and sip a good glass of wine before hitting a touring Broadway hit at Playhouse Square.
However, there’s really no substitute for going outside and reveling in The Land’s natural splendor. Kayak on the Cuyahoga River, do yoga on the shore of Lake Erie or hike and bike along paths that wind throughout our city and beyond. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that a city with this much green space is a haven for wellness.
Getting out and enjoying the amazing wellness resources that are Cleveland’s many parks, gardens, trails and waterways are an incredible first step to caring for your physical and mental health.
