In 1847, Bishop Amadeus Rappe commissioned
a piece of land on East 9th Street to become the home of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland. Patrick Charles Keeley built the church in the ornamental Gothic style. A statue of Bishop Rappe faces Superior Avenue.
