The completed African American Cultural Garden will reflect the Cleveland African American community’s journey from the past to the present and into the future. It begins with the symbolic “Door of No Return,” installed and dedicated in 2016, representing the departure from Africa. Planned additions include a multi-use platform with North Star imagery, honoring Ohio’s role in the Underground Railroad and the Great Migration, and a triangular sculpture symbolizing strength, resilience, and the contributions of people of African descent. A water feature will trace the path from slavery to freedom, ending in a fountain symbolizing victory and hope.
