It’s true, Cleveland is known for its cultural giants: The Cleveland Museum of Art, MOCA, and the Cleveland Institute of Art. But within its quiet neighborhoods lies a vibrant art scene.
In its 17th year, the annual Sparx City Hop continues to be the largest arts and culture festival in Cleveland, allowing residents and visitors to take a day trip around the city to experience firsthand local art and meet the artists that live and work in the Land.
That means getting your hands dirty with take-home projects, meeting local artists and touring their studios, and scoring deals on delicious food in Cleveland’s most energetic, art-forward neighborhoods and getting an earful of live music all day long. The day starts at the main hub underneath Playhouse Square’s GE Chandelier. From there, it’s your choice where the day takes you, with the choice of three free trolleys:
Red Line
For a historic focus of Cleveland’s art scene, choose the Red Line to explore Downtown Cleveland’s Warehouse District, the Gateway District, the old Arcade, and the East Bank of the Flats. Just look up at the towering buildings to take in some of the stunning historic architecture and iconic landmarks that you’ve read about in history books- come to life.
Blue Line
Looking to create some art of your own? Take the Blue Line to the 21st and Superior where artist Guy-Vincent awaits to embark on a project to turn plain telephone poles into lively works of art. You’ll also run into some hidden gems like the Negative Space gallery in Asia Town, a beloved gathering space for a tight-knit community, and the studio of Jerome T. White, who blends mediums to create an incredible works of art centered around the African American experience.
Green Line
Attendees who are looking to stop for a bite to eat should ride along the Green Line, where Touch Supper Club, Sweet! The Cupcakery, Sweet Rider, and Farkas Bakery are all offering food and drink specials during the event to help power your exploration further. You’ll need the fuel if you’re planning on exploring the bustling Ohio City area. Talented indie craft artists set up shop at the Cleveland Bazaar in Market Garden Park from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Grab a seat on Townhall’s patio for a drink on West 25th Street before watching Mike St. Jude and the Valentines perform at St. Ignatius High School from 4-6 p.m.
