NIELSEN Overture to Maskarade
TCHAIKOVSKY Violin Concerto
SIBELIUS Symphony No. 1
Though dismissed as “long and pretentious” after its premiere in 1899, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto quickly became one of the composer’s most beloved creations. Soloist Stefan Jackiw joins The Cleveland Orchestra for this astonishing showpiece, which is followed by Sibelius’s First Symphony, an expansive and brooding work that brought the Finnish composer international attention. Guest conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali, who makes his Cleveland debut, opens the program with the buoyant Maskarade Overture of Carl Nielsen.
This program’s Concert Preview lectures will be presented by Michael Strasser, Professor of Musicology, Baldwin Wallace University
