Song Recital Project presents Jason Fuh (baritone) and John Simmons (piano) in a recital, “Wayfarer in Dream,” featuring the following pieces: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791): “Nur mutig, mein Herze” (“Be brave, my heart”) from the opera Zaide, K. 344 Gustav Mahler (1860–1911): Song cycle Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer) Samuel Barber (1910–1981): Three Songs, op. 10, on poems by James Joyce Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873–1943): Selections of Романсы (Romances) Songs in this program explore the emotional journey of the human heart across cultures and eras. The aria from Zaide by Mozart opens with a call to courage in the face of uncertainty. In Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, Mahler follows a wanderer grappling with love and loss as nature reflects his shifting emotions. Barber’s settings of poetry by James Joyce capture moments of introspection, dream, and unease. The songs of Rachmaninoff conclude the program with passionate lyricism, culminating in the exhilarating “Spring Waters,” a musical image of renewal and unstoppable life. The program is performed with projected texts and translations. More information about Jason Fuh (opens in a new tab) and John Simmons (opens in a new tab) can be found on their web pages. Free-will donations are welcome at the door. This performance is made possible through the CMA’s generosity.
