STRAUSS Heldengedichte
WALKER Sinfonia No. 5 ("Visions")*
KORNGOLD Symphony in F sharp
Franz Welser-Möst leads the Cleveland Orchestra through an evening of discovery in works penned by two American legends. First, the final piece by celebrated African American composer George Walker, written in 2015 in response to the shooting massacre at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in South Carolina. This expressive work is paired with Erich Korngold's only symphony, penned in his best melodic Hollywood style as a musical tribute to the life and achievements of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. From concert hall to Hollywood, from the church pulpit to the White House, this concert rings forth with true American regard for musical depth and emotion.
