BERG - Lulu
In-Concert Opera Presentation
Sung in German with projected supertitles.
Performance of the two-act version of Lulu, premiered in 1937.
Centered around performances of Alban Berg's opera Lulu, The Cleveland Orchestra's festival this season is titled "Censored: Art & Power" and will work to examine and illuminate the early 20th-century world that created this challenging, ground-breaking opera. Themes of exploration include the censorship of art and artists by Nazi Germany and other regimes, and how power, prejudice, and politics are used to sway thinking for and against art and artists — yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
Two Cleveland Orchestra concerts (May 15 and 23) explore influences and discrimination against modern, jazz, and African-American composers and music.
