The Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (MOCA), located in the Uptown district, is celebrating its 50th anniversary during 2019 with a suite of special exhibitions — the centerpiece of which is Lee Mingwei’s “You Are Not a Stranger.”
The Taiwanese artist is world renowned for his critically acclaimed participatory installations, where he invites the audience to explore issues of trust, intimacy and self-awareness. “You Are Not a Stranger” features a collection of four of Lee’s most popular works:
- “100 Days of Lily” (1995): A photographic portrait of the project in which Lee cultivated and raised a single Lily from seed to death.
- “The Moving Garden” (2009): Visitors are invited to take a flower from a 45-foot granite table and give it to a stranger when they leave the museum.
- “The Mending Project” (2009): Visitors may bring a garment to a volunteer mender and sit and talk while the garment is mended to colorful thread attached to other mended garments and spools on the wall.
- “Sonic Blossom” (2013): An interactive performance featuring Cleveland Institute of Music student singers performing to a museum guest seated in a specially-designed chair.
