The second line parade is a funerary mainstay everyone should have stipulated in their wills, because if you’re gonna go out, go out with a party.
In this New Orleans African American funeral tradition, a brass band plays a mournful dirge while following the casket and leading mourners to the cemetery. After the burial, the band plays upbeat jazz in a celebration of the dearly departed’s life on Earth. Somewhere along the way, people figured out that this amazing musical party was so much fun that it became a part of nearly every celebration.
Now it’s your chance to get in on this bayou-rific blast with the Karamu House’s inaugural Second Line Parade and Sneaker Ball, Aug. 3, 2019 at historic Lakeview Cemetery, to celebrate the theater’s glorious past, dynamic present and exciting future.
This unique event allows guests to discover notable Clevelanders, dance with jubilee in the New Orleans-style second line parade and enjoy savory Creole fare and drinks, all while immersing themselves in the sights and sounds of a traditional Louisiana jazz band performance decked out in their best all-white attire and sweet kicks.
Guests will enjoy an open bar with heavy fare. VIP Tickets include early admission to the party, tour and trolley seating, as well as second line swag. Young Professionals (35 and under) receive discounted general admission.
