The second CAN Triennial is set to make its triumphant return in a variety of locations throughout The Land, July 8 – Aug. 31. A regionally focused exhibition, CAN Triennial features an assortment of Northeast Ohio artists selected by an intergenerational and diverse team of curators, and representing this moment in time, place and history in Cleveland.
CAN Triennial: “You Are Here” will examine place and location, skewer notions of culture and politics, and foster discussions about presence and loss. Together, the many exhibits will map out an experiential journey through the literal geography of our city, and the ever-complicated situational understandings of place, context, identity and, ultimately, action.
CAN in the Neighborhood
This unbelievable exhibition, unique to Cleveland, will unfold over two months across six neighborhoods, each featuring their own curated throughlines and events, with more curated collections to come throughout the Triennial:
- Clark-Fulton: “Cause for Pause” at Future Ink Graphics in the Pivot Center for Art, Dance and Expression allows for attendees to gain posture in their presence, as some pieces tower above visitors. “Presence Through Perspective” at the Hildebrandt Artist Collective highlights the deliberate nature of processing and productivity, given the space’s former life as a meat packing plant. “Snack” at Inlet Dance Theatre is a collection of short dances that explores the American gig economy and its effect on its workers.
- Collinwood: “Inside/Outsized” at the Brick Gallery explores the Triennial’s broader theme of “You Are Here” through topics of identity, impression and being seen. “An Excavation, Of Sorts” at William Busta Projects asks attendees to dig deep into a kind of poetic archaeology to unearth this region and this place. “Rerouting In Progress” at Praxis Fiber Workshop helps us look at life as a sequence of intentional destinations. “Scene and Seen” at Waterloo Arts posits that the two types of people encountering art are participants and spectators.
- Gordon Square: “All In” at ARTNEO features an inclusive mix of some of our area’s long-beloved artists that samples the generational, stylistic diversity of the whole.
- Playhouse Square: “Yes, I Am Here Right Now” at the Bonfoey Gallery investigates our current placement in society in how the influence of the current culture is reflected in the creation process. The exhibit continues at the Galleries At CSU, where the artists are all connected by their need to examine our current society and where they stand in it.
- St. Clair-Superior: “Shadow” at Zygote Press is a response to the architectural and organizational qualities of Zygote press, reflecting its intimate and tranquil atmosphere and precise layout. “Pose” at Morgan Conservatory reacts to the organization’s grand, industrial scale and multipurpose uses that reveal themselves behind corners. Meanwhile, Graffiti Heart hosts “Cleveland Graffiti Writing In The 90s & Now: A Panel Discussion.”
- University Circle: “Understanding The Space We Fill” at Artists Archives of the Western Reserve revolves around the ideas of identity, environment and life’s journeys. Selections for “The Way We Transcend” at The Cleveland Institute of Art and “Look How Far We’ve Come” at The Sculpture Center also revolve around those same ideas.
