We’ve all got our favorite Cleveland restaurants. The reliable standbys we revisit again and again, favorite orders memorized. In a culinary landscape studded with glittering dining experiences, it can be easy to miss the hidden gems that will blow you away with their creativity and craft. Here are just a few such highlights of The Land’s lineup, and a few more that could be new favorites in the making.
Hang at Bar Oni, a Japanese sports bar (or izakaya) serving small plates imagined by innovative and provocative chef Matt Spinner. Root for the home team while chomping on yakitori, dumplings, sashimi and wings. Drink offerings are intentionally different—think DIY hi-balls and Japanese whisky cocktails. But whatever you do, don’t ask for yum yum sauce. (Just trust us.)
Fun to say; even more fun to eat! Zhug was named one of Esquire’s best new restaurants in 2020. (No big deal.) Chef Douglas Katz artfully embellishes the area’s Middle Eastern food offerings. Specialties like labneh, lutenitsa, muhamara and moussaka roll off the tongue and also make for a memorable, satisfying dining experience.
Sophisticated small plates are the hallmark of Salt+, an intimate neighborhood spot in Lakewood. Chef Jill Vedaa’s thoughtfully composed small plates are wildly grand in flavor and texture, while Jessica Parkison’s cocktail menu is playful and ever-evolving. Seasonality and local flavors are respected, and these hands-on owners support small farms and producers. Now that’s cool+!
Chef/owner Athan Zarnas melds the bright, versatile flavors of the Mediterranean region over a blazing fire at ALEA, his intimate 33-seat restaurant in Hingetown. It’s a suave, sexy little spot with a killer wine list, making it perfect for spirited group gatherings or cozy nights for two. Try a five- or eight-course tasting menu for three hours of pure bliss.
Smoky aromas waft from Proof, a subterranean enclave with meat-centric dishes, local brews and craft cocktails. Start with some chicharrones, and keep the party going with honey cornbread or mac-and-cheese. And you bet your sweet you-know-what they’ve got burnt ends—slather ‘em with one of six housemade sauces. Pro-tip: Just don’t wear your white T-shirt.
Find homestyle Salvadoran food at Pupuseria y Antojitos Guanaquitas in La Villa Hispana, an emerging enclave of Latinx businesses and culture in Cleveland’s Clark-Fulton neighborhood. The specialties of the house are freshly made pupusas; thick, griddled corn flour cakes filled with a variety of tasty ingredients (think of it like a flattened, Salvadoran pierogi).
The owners of Luca Cleveland and Luca West are preparing to open Acqua di Luca, a modern Mediterranean/Italian seafood restaurant in the former XO Steakhouse space.
Located on lively East 4th Street, Goma is chef Dante Boccuzzi’s latest culinary incarnation— serving up impeccably prepared sushi.
You’ll want to slink over to Filter in the Warehouse District for glam cocktails, Insta-worthy décor and maybe some local celeb sightings.
Salt, a Lakewood restaurant specializing in composed small plates, killer cocktails and unique wine by Chef Jill Vedaa and Jessica Parkison of Cleveland, Ohio.
A new dining concept by chef Douglas Katz that offers Middle Eastern Mezze in a casual, high energy urban space.
Here at Pupuseria y Antojitos Guanaquitas, we serve authentic Salvadoran food to our beloved community in Cleveland, OH.
