History hasn't always been easy on us. But pressure can create diamonds. Come check out our gems.
Here in Cleveland, we take pride in our beer. The city is frequently named among the top beer cities in the country and if you've ever been here, it's easy to see why.
Cleveland has 39 breweries in a 25-mile radius of the city with 32 of those being in the Greater Cleveland Area. If you want to expand your brewery adventures to all of Northeast Ohio, that number increases to 68 breweries within a short Uber or Lyft ride away. In fact, Cleveland offers 5.13 breweries for every 100,000 people living here. These numbers continue to increase as more hotly anticipated breweries are opening in the near future.
It's not just about quantity, though. Each of Cleveland's breweries offer a unique and original take on the craft beer experience. For starters, look no further than the Godfather of Cleveland beer, Great Lakes Brewing Company. They're best known for their award-winning Christmas Ale, but their taproom hosts three different levels of bars as well as a patio overlooking the West Side Market.
Next door to said West Side Market is Market Garden Brewery, home to a Palace of Fermentation and the best scotch eggs around. Just down the street, you'll discover Platform Beer Co., who hosts revolving food local vendors nightly. They just wrapped up their kettle-sour series, where they released a new sour beer flavor each month.
Recent newcomers include Collision Bend Brewery on the East Bank of the Flats, which offers a great selection of brews and unmatched views of the Cuyahoga River.
If you're Downtown, check out Noble Beast Brewing Company for a Manchurian Grisette, their Belgian-style saison blended with Kombucha. They also have a full menu of salads and sandwiches including grub for vegetarians and family-friendly menu items.
Terrestrial Brewing Co., a neighborhood brewpub in the burgeoning Battery Park area, offers great beer and is also dog friendly. Try their Infusion Tower--Pineapple Express Edition for a tropical IPA perfect for the dog days of summer.
Visit Forest City Brewery's tasting room, which was created using reclaimed materials, for a vintage Cleveland experience. Try their "Furbell" Irish Stout and pair it with the insane Frickaccio's Garlic Knots on their menu.
Goldhorn Brewery will give you the homey feels of East 55th St. with Slovenian roots and Old World beers. A favorite is the Polka City Pilsner that pairs well with any of the pub food you'll find as a part of Hub 55, Goldhorn's in-house scratch kitchen.
Stop by Saucy Brew Works, where you can find a white stout named Fauxbia, a fruit beer called Punchline and show-stopping pizza.
A very new brewery that's located in a very old building is Masthead Brewing Company. Located in the historic Bryant Building on Superior Ave., you'll find a taproom that was originally built in 1921, Neapolitan wood-fired pizza, and beers that are barrel aged on site.
Another newbie you won't want to miss is Bad Tom Smith Brewing on West 25th. This highly popular Cincinnati company is expanding and Cleveland was the perfect place to start.
These breweries pride themselves on their innovation, craft and, most of all, their high-quality beer. Regardless of how often you visit Cleveland, there's always something new to try on the brewery front. Or you can always return to the time-honored classics. Regardless, be sure to have someone else driving. With great beer, comes great responsibility.
