The home of the mother of all amusement parks isn’t just a thrill-seeker’s destination. Situated on the Lake Erie waterfront about 65 miles west of Downtown Cleveland, the city of Sandusky and its surrounding area is more than just Cedar Point — dubbed, alternately, the “Roller Coaster Capital of the World” and “America’s Roller Coast” (get it?!).
Beyond all the fanny packs and french fries is a lake … a big one. In fact, dotting this very expanse is a modest archipelago of islands known, collectively as … wait for it … the Lake Erie Islands. These islands have fun, rugged sounding names like Put-in-Bay, Gibralter Island and Rattlesnake Island. Most are accessible by ferry while others are a bit more remote.
