Clevelander Tips

In Cleveland, “soda” is referred to as “pop.” If you hear “Burning River” or “Holy Moses,” it’s just someone ordering a craft beer made locally by Great Lakes Brewing Company. Many Clevelanders identify themselves as being either eastsiders or westsiders (the division being the Cuyahoga River), but all seem to claim downtown.

History

Cleveland has a proud history that is 228 years in the making. General Moses Cleaveland of the Connecticut Land Company came to the Western Reserve and founded the City of Cleveland in 1796. The name changed to its current spelling in 1831 when the “a” was dropped in order to fit the city’s name on a newspaper masthead.

Fun Facts

Cleveland is the home of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the creators of Superman, as well as a filming location for major motion pictures, including “A Christmas Story,” “The Avengers” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” Oscar winners Paul Newman and Halle Berry hail from the region. So does Hall of Fame guitarist Joe Walsh, who honed his craft with The James Gang in the 1970s with the popular single “Funk #49.” LifeSavers candy, the modern golf ball and the electric streetlight are all Cleveland firsts invented right here in Cleveland.

Cleveland, located in the Eastern Standard Time Zone (EST) in the State of Ohio within Cuyahoga County, is on the southern shore of Lake Erie, part of the Great Lakes Region.

Cleveland-Akron-Canton comprises the 15th largest combined metro area in the United States with more than 2 million residents in the Greater Cleveland metropolitan statistical area (MSA) and nearly 400,000 in the City of Cleveland.

For a top-shelf experience, Parlay on Ninth provides a proper man cave vibe with honest drinks, nonstop sports action and a cigar lounge. And to find out why Parilya has become a food truck favorite, check out its homey new brick-and-mortar in Olmsted Falls— showcasing Filipino cuisine such as lumpia and hearty pork sisig.

Stay a While

More than a century since the Renaissance Cleveland first opened its doors as Hotel Cleveland , the Public Square staple is returning to its roots. A name change back to the original moniker will accompany a top-to-bottom renovation as the hotel joins Marriott’s high-end Autograph Collection.

The Marriott chain is also making plans to build Ohio’s first W Hotel inside the 40-story Erieview Tower near the Rock Hall, along with a new Delta by Marriott featuring a restaurant, bar and 3,500 square feet of meeting space in MidTown.

Not to be outdone, Hilton has various projects in development— including the 130-room Motto by Hilton inside Ohio City’s ambitious Bridgeworks community.

And old souls, take note: the Baker Building is being converted into the 97-room Fidelity Hotel with a throwback feel to the Gilded Age (not to mention an on-site restaurant and speakeasy).

MUSEUM IN MOTION

Forget Drew Carey or Machine Gun Kelly—Balto, Lucy, Happy and Dunk are the hottest local celebrities at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Each iconic attraction is displayed in the museum’s new 14,650-square-foot Visitor Hall , part of an ambitious ongoing renovation and expansion. Other recent upgrades include the redesigned Smead Discovery Center (a hands-on learning hub for kids ages 7 and under) and 3-D movies in the updated Murch Auditorium

Flanked by two 420-foot towers, the new Top Thrill 2 c oaster at Cedar Point is the only one of its kind—a dual-tower “strata” coaster (the term for topping heights of 420 feet). With a rebel yell, you’ll surely cry, “More! More! More!”

The heart of Cleveland’s Hispanic community will beat even stronger when CentroVilla 25 opens its doors. The multifaceted centro mercado will include a grocery and food hall, commercial kitchen and lively plaza for outdoor gatherings.

New digs are on deck for Progressive Field, which plans to unveil a $202 million renovation for Opening Day 2025. In the works are a beer hall, a private lounge behind home plate, an open-Terrace Club and more.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is dropping the needle on a massive $135 million expansion. Plugging in the new wing means more space for concerts, traveling exhibits and amped-up artifacts from the archives.

Primate real estate is the name of the game at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, set to expand its RainForest to 140,000 square feet with two multi-story habitats for gorillas and orangutans.

SOLAR STUNNER

PATH OF TOTALITY

Mark your calendars now for 3:13 p.m. on April 8, 2024—when we get a front-row seat to a celestial stunner. Cleveland sits along the path of totality for that day’s solar eclipse, meaning nearly four minutes of mid-afternoon darkness as the moon blocks the face of the sun. (Not to brag or anything, but that’s one of the longest durations of any major city.)

TOTAL ECLIPSE FESTIVAL

Celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime occasion at the Great Lakes Science Center’s Total Eclipse Festival at North Coast Harbor (April 6-8). Along with themed activities, GLSC will present an “Out of this World” performance by The Cleveland Orchestra— complete with intergalactic scores from 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Wars and mind-blowing snaps from the Hubble Telescope and International Space Station.

Total Eclipse

Cleveland’s got big plans for the total solar eclipse in 2024.

SOLARFEST + TOTAL ON THE OVAL

Another can’t-miss stop is the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s eclipse bash on University Circle. Over the weekend, CMNH plans to host “SolarFest: Eclipse Family Fun Days” with special programs and activities for sky-gazers of all ages. On Monday, it’s time for the main event: the “Total on the Oval” watch party. (How ‘bout this for FOMO? We won’t be back in an eclipse’s path of totality until 2444.)

GUARDIANS HOME OPENER

Amidst all this eclipse excitement, the Cleveland Guardians also play their home opener — against the Chicago White Sox—on April 8. The eclipse will arrive during pre-game festivities with the gates opening at 2pm and the ballgame scheduled to start at 5:10pm. The Guards promise to embrace the moment, so stay tuned for details. We’ve never been so excited to see Progressive Field go dark.

Making Waves

In recent years, expansion of the Towpath Trail has ensured that runners, cyclists and walking enthusiasts could see Northeast Ohio from a new perspective. Now, officials are setting their sights on reconnecting Cleveland to its waterfront jewels, Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River.

During the 1800s, Irish and Eastern European immigrants flocked to a cozy area along the Cuyahoga River now known as Irishtown Bend. In the coming years, however, the underutilized space will come to life as a 23-acre park. Dubbed Irishtown Bend Park , the project groundbreaking is scheduled for early 2026 (after the stabilization of a sloping hill on the land).

Prolific regional job growth is spurring new housing in Hough to the tune of approximately 800 new market-rate apartments.

UNIVERSITY CIRCLE

University Circle’s skyline continues to evolve with the construction of the 11-story Library Lofts atop a new Cleveland Public Library branch.

Elsewhere along the Cuyahoga River is an ambitious, transformational $3.5 billion project dubbed the Tower City Riverfront . The multiphase, 15- to-20-year plan will ideally result in 3.5 million square feet of new development on 35 acres of public and private land. The result? Connecting Public Square to the riverfront via a new Tower City Center marketplace, as well as office space and residential units.

Just a mile north, the North Coast Master Plan is in progress with the goal of reimagining the Lake Erie shore. As funding comes into focus, construction on a land bridge called the North Coast Connector could start as soon as 2026.

African American Cultural Garden (AACG)

Located within the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, the AACG takes a powerful perspective on the past with black granite walls representing the “doorway of no return” on Africa’s west coast during the transatlantic slave trade.

Cleveland has the second-largest Hispanic population in Ohio, and their stories take center stage thanks to companies such as Teatro Público de Cleveland (which marked its 10th anniversary in 2023). Also of note is LatinUs Theater Company, continuing to bloom in its home at the Pivot Center with “La Botánica”

from May 30-June 15. For those looking to stretch their own performance wings, Julia De Burgos Cultural Arts Center offers year-round classes (including flamenco, guitar and Latin social dance) taught by local artists.

Chef Peggy Cruz nurtures her creative spark in the kitchen of Cha’Firo, where she prepares health-minded versions of Puerto Rican dishes from her childhood.

When Cruz’s son Ramondo decided to become a vegetarian, she was inspired to reinvent her mother’s recipes through a plant-based lens. Case in point: her mashed potato balls, which remix the traditional meat-and-potatoes dish with vegan chili.

For Cruz, it’s a legacy she loves to honor and build on with her own unique stamp. “[My mother’s] food was the best food ever to me and my family,” shares Cruz. “To take the same recipes and create a cleaner, healthier version without losing flavor is a challenge and allows me to be creative.”

Coming soon is Quarter Girl, set to showcase Cruz’s Puerto Rican street food in the evolving La Villa Hispana district.

MIX at CMA

All of Cleveland’s a Canvas

Walls become canvases at Graffiti HeArt, an LGBTQ+ and womanowned gallery and nonprofit that elevates graffiti and street artists. Based in the St. Clair-Superior neighborhood, the organization is known for its art shows, mural tours and role in commissioning artists to paint some of the city’s most well-known murals. Even the gallery exterior is a work of art—painted in rainbow streaks by renowned artist Kelly “RISK” Graval.

A collaboration between Destination Cleveland and Graffiti HeArt, the Murals Across the City project will feature six murals in six different Cleveland neighborhoods. A huge luna moth in Slavic Village and a brightly-colored Cleveland skyline on Lorain Avenue are the first installments.

And get to know the MidTown neighborhood, just east of Downtown, by wandering around to view its 20 vibrant, large-scale murals. These public art pieces are the lasting legacy of Cleveland Walls!, a weeklong festival spearheaded by global art powerhouse Pow! Wow!

AMPLIFIED

Cleveland is monumental. Where else can you find a gigantic Free Stamp sculpture like ours? It’s a real Pop Art conversation piece. Over at Cleveland Museum of Art, a bronze cast of Rodin’s famous “The Thinker” sits out front—damaged, but undeterred, by a 1970 bombing.

Closer to the Cuyahoga River, eight towering Art Deco sandstone figures—the Guardians of Traffic—stand atop the Hope Memorial Bridge. Each holds a different type of vehicle, reminding us of humanity’s mobile spirit and countless triumphs of transportation.

Cleveland wouldn’t be as bright without Stamy Paul. As the founder of art gallery and nonprofit Graffiti HeArt, Paul has helped commission 60 public murals by graffiti and street artists.

The Graffiti HeArt movement started when Paul was struggling to find an artist to create a piece for her home. Still inspired by the street art seen during her business travels, Paul sparked the idea of creating a way to promote the often misunderstood art form.

Since then, Graffiti HeArt has added color and art all over Cleveland and sponsored 60+ art school scholarships to underprivileged high schoolers. This June, the nonprofit will celebrate its 10-year anniversary.

WOLF PACK CHORUS

Chef Chris Wolf’s namesake may be nestled in Little Italy, but it’s worth the parking hassle. After all, Wolf Pack Chorus touts a ferociously fresh approach to food! Grab a steak frites salad for lunch or some fried pepperoni during happy hour; the IG-worthy drinks alone make this restaurant a date night stunner. Sunday brunch means Korean fried chicken or Millennial-classic avocado toast, topped with a sunny-side-up egg.

Jazz lovers nearly counted Nighttown out as “gone but not forgotten,” but this beloved Cleveland Heights spot is finally back open after several years of renovation. And it’s worth the wait: Not only is the space refreshed, but chef Rowan Murray’s seasonal menu is stacked (and not just with sourdough waffles). Live music is still on pause but should be up and running again soon.

Accolades abound for the newest joint venture of Food Network champion chef Jill Vedaa and her Salt+ business partner Jessica Parkison. The pair overhauled the interior of a 115-year-old house on Larchmere (formerly home to Felice Urban Café). The restaurant’s name is a nod to Parkison’s grandmother Poppy Etta Hodgson, and its internationally-influenced menu features hearty fare that would surely make her proud.

Lakewood’s The Vegan Doughnut Company is Ohio’s first (and only) 100% vegan donut shop, turning out gorgeous works of art that are also nut-free. A new arrival in ClarkFulton, Green Kitchen combines a dive bar with a vegan kitchen that makes just about everything from scratch.
