ST. LAWRENCE STRING QUARTET – November 11, 2016 @ 8 pm Since its inception in 1878, Oberlin’s Artist Recital Series at historic Finney Chapel has presented more than 1,000 of the world’s most acclaimed and accomplished musicians, conductors, orchestras, chamber ensembles, and composers. On November 11, the ARS presents the St. Lawrence String Quartet! Since it’s founding in 1989, this Canadian string quartet enjoys an undisputed reputation as one of the world's great ensembles, known for their wit and intensity. Their energetic commitment to the established quartet literature, such as those by Haydn and Beethoven, is equal to their championship of new works, like those of ohn Adams, Osvaldo Golijov, Ezequiel Vinao, and Jonathan Berger. The SLSQ is currently serving a Artist in Residency at Stanford University. They have also served residencies at Yale University, the Juilliard School, the Hartt School, and the University of Toronto. They have won many awards including first prize in the Banff International String Quartet Competition, first prize in the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, a Juno Award, and a Preis der Deutsches Schallplaten Kritik. The Quartet has recorded four CDs for EMI, which include works by Tchaikovsky, Schumann, Shostakovich, and Golijov. Lesley Robertson and Geoff Nuttall are founding members of the group, and hail from Edmonton, Alberta, and London, Ontario, respectively. Christopher Costanza is from Utica, NY, and joined the group in 2003. Owen Dalby, from the San Francisco Bay area, joined in 2015. All four members of the quartet currently live and teach at Stanford University in California. "With Pinchas Zukerman’s matchless musicianship and charisma at its core, this is a trio made in heaven.”—Limelight Magazine Program HAYDN - String Quartet in F Minor, Op. 20, No. 5 ADAMS - Second String Quartet BEETHOVEN - String Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132
