The Western Reserve Historical Society has been telling Northeast Ohio's story for 150 years. As it celebrates this milestone, it's highlighting two major exhibits at the Cleveland History Center: WOW Factor: 150 Years of Bold Clothes, and Cleveland Starts Here. Bring your group tour to this phenomenal representation of historical preservation and education.
WOW Factor: 150 Years of Bold Clothes
This exhibit and opening event in the Chisholm Halle Costume Wing highlights the ways that Clevelanders use fashion to stand out in a crowd with extraordinary items from WRHS’ nationally ranked Costume and Textile Collection.
“Wow Factor” is clothing’s ability to inspire feelings of wonder and awe. These emotions are triggered by beauty,
craftsmanship, rarity, and humor. Each garment speaks for itself and possesses a powerful presence. The exhibition features over 150 years of show-stopping clothing and accessories made by Cleveland designers as well as international designers such as Christian Dior, Carolina Herrera, and Coco Chanel.
It takes bold women to wear these clothes. The exhibition features Cleveland women who are immigrants, scholars, travelers, artists, designers, philanthropists, and CEOs. They are Jewish, Jordanian, Japanese, African American, and transgender. From Ada Watterson Yerkes, who broke conventions to pursue a PhD in botany before 1900, to Reena Samaan Goodwin, who makes her mark today as a PR maven and DJ, they are inspiring and relatable. The accompanying catalog will tell these stories, and bring each woman, and dress, to life.
