Tee It Up
The grass is always greener for Northeast Ohio golfers, who have more than 300 different courses from which to choose for a round or two during the spring and summer months.
The Cleveland Metroparks alone has eight courses of varying difficulty, from the easygoing 9-hole par 3 at Shawnee Hills to the championship-caliber Sleepy Hollow, with its sloping greens and pernicious bunkers. If a less-traditional game is more your speed, both Mastick Woods and Shawnee Hills also offer the novel sport FootGolf, which challenges players to follow the rules of golf but use regulation size 5 soccer balls, thereby encouraging fancy footwork rather than majestic swings.
Other public golf courses making Northeast Ohio a putter's paradise include picturesque Boulder Creek, rustic Geauga County mainstay Fowler's Mill, and lake- and stream-dotted Medina course Shale Creek, where the Rocky River is in play on holes 10-15.
Up for a challenge? The tree-shaded Pine Hills in Hinckley, with its watered, bentgrass fairways, elevated greens and undulating terrain is sure to test your skill. If you're venturing out to Cedar Point during your stay (or even if you're not), try nearby Sawmill Creek on the shores of Lake Erie.
