Rain or Shine, RTA gets you to Downtown Cleveland
Public transit and walkability make getting around downtown a breeze
By Meghan Tinker, Downtown Cleveland Alliance
Coming to Downtown Cleveland and don't have a car? Don't worry, we've got you covered. Downtown Cleveland welcomes thousands of commuters and visitors every day, no matter what the weather.
Downtown workers and visitors have commuting options besides sitting in highway traffic. The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) serves Downtown with multiple bus routes, four rapid transit lines, and two bus-rapid-transit systems. In fact, Cleveland is the only city in Ohio to boast light rail service and is the nation's first, and one of the few, to directly connect its airport to Downtown by rail.
Each of these options allows transit users to commute into Downtown Cleveland without getting behind the wheel themselves—a great option when highways can be backed up due to inclement weather or accidents. In fact, the ridership of RTA's newest Downtown connection, the Cleveland State Line, grew by more than 32 percent in 2015.
The public transit system is the same transit system attracting Millennials into the Cleveland area. With Downtown Cleveland's workforce and residents as well as the national workforce skewing toward a younger, more environmentally conscious demographic, the access to public transit has become a more important factor in retaining talent and encouraging residential and business growth in urban cores.
Once Downtown on weekdays, workers or visitors are a five-minute walk from more than 15 bars and restaurants, on average, making for an easy stroll to lunch or happy hour when possible. When Cleveland's weather prevents even the easiest of walks around Downtown, the free Downtown Trolleys make stops every 10 minutes to escort pedestrians around the neighborhood.
With more than 5,000 riders per day, trolleys are becoming more popular than ever in Cleveland as they celebrate 10 years in service. Additional evening and weekend service on Cleveland's C-Line Trolley has been made available through the generous sponsorship of civic and corporate donors, and the Downtown Cleveland Alliance continues to work with RTA to seek continued funding for future years.
If you're in town for a meeting or Convention, the walkability and public transit options make it easy to get to an off-site lunch at one of our nationally recognized restaurants, catch a post-convention game, or simply see some of our great attractions between meetings. Welcome to Cleveland!
