10 Ways to Do Memorial Day Weekend

One long weekend. Ten great things to do in Cleveland. Start planning your Memorial Day Weekend before you get roped into yet another awkward family picnic.

10. Baseball

Baseball is about as Americana as it gets. Memorial Day weekend kicks off with a Cleveland Indians home stand against the Houston Astros. Watch the boys of summer during dinger season at Progressive Field May 24-27.

Or, head over to Avon to take in five straight days of baseball during the Mid-American Conference Baseball Championship featuring the eight best teams in the MAC May 23-27.

Even more home field action takes place with minor league teams Lake County Captains (vs. Great Lakes Loons) and the Akron RubberDucks (vs. Richmond Flying Squirrels) May 25-28.

9. Tremont Greek Festival

Work off that homemade baklava and a big plate of braised lamb with some traditional Greek dancing during the 48th Annual Tremont Greek Fest May 25-28.

8. Taste of Summer

With its handfuls of spots for day (or night) drinking, brunching alfresco, bar gaming and taking in a swell view of Cleveland’s waterfronts, the Flats East Bank is already one of the most magnetic districts in Downtown for summertime partying. Add in the Scene Taste of Summer and now you’ve got three whole days of outdoor food, craft cocktails, beers, outdoor games and shopping. Check it out May 25-27.

7. Berea’s National Rib Cook-Off

“Ribs. I had ribs for lunch.” This won’t just be one of Ron Burgundy’s best lines, it’ll be your reality during this rib event at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds May 25-28. Nosh on ribs prepped by more than a dozen of the nation’s best ribbers, while enjoying music from bands churning out country, rock, disco, 60s and Motown.

6. Playhouse Square

Perhaps no big surprise, but Cleveland’s theater district is seriously thumping with events all weekend long. Shows include the massively popular Broadway blockbuster “Aladdin” playing at the KeyBank State Theatre, which will — no doubt — be something for which you’ll want to score tickets in advance.

Also during Memorial Weekend, grab a seat to “The Royale,” a theatrical piece that tells the story of Negro Heavyweight Champion Jay “The Sport” Jackson who is determined to prove he is equal to his white counterpart — in the ring and in life.

And, for fans of the popular “Star Wars”-centric podcast Rebel Force Radio, mark your calendar for a live episode taking place at Kennedy’s Cabaret Theatre on May 25.

5. Cleveland Pops Orchestra

Red, white, blue and all things patriotic liven-up the stage as the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, along with the Pops Chorus and The United States Army Field Band, perform military-inspired music and pageantry. The popular event happens at Severance Hall May 25 at 8 p.m.

4. Reggae Fest Cleveland

Head southeast to Twinsburg for one Cleveland’s most laid-back music festivals of the year — Reggae Fest Cleveland. The event features four live reggae bands, as well as a mishmash of food trucks, wine offerings and beer. Get tickets in advance because they’ll likely sell out!

3. May Take Two | Double Feature

Screen a double feature of every Tom Cruise fan’s favorite movies, “Top Gun” and “Mission: Impossible,” on the giant dome cinema laser projection system, the Cleveland Clinic DOME Theater. Your mission, should choose to accept it, would be to visit the Great Lakes Science Center on May 26 at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

2. Catch Meaning Music Fest

Listen to nationally recognized indie music talent all while making the world a better place? Yeah, sounds like a good plan to us. Head to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on May 27 for a dynamic lineup of bands including The Floozies, Ripe, Aaron Benjamin, The Vindys and more. Proceeds from the event support organizations that guide young adults in their journey to catch meaning and make a positive impact in the world.

1. Journey & Def Leppard

FACT: Anyone who says they do not belt out every lyric to “Pour Some Sugar on Me” when it blasts over the speakers is a liar. Truth be told, those songs are best heard (and sung) when coming from the artists themselves. The legendary duo of Journey and Def Leppard are co-headlining a national tour, which swings by Quicken Loans Arena May 28.
