Lakefront Beach Parties
Lake Erie's The Hottest Party in Town Every Thursday This Summer
By Lexi Hotchkiss
Happy hour. Oh, happy hour. How we love thee.
But you know what would make happy hour about 10 times better? If you had it on a beach with live music and good food. Admit it - that sounds pretty amazing right about now.
Turns out, Cleveland's about 10 times better than most places on earth. So, remember that whole happy hour on a beach thing? Yeah, we've got that.
Edgewater Beach, which is located a hop-skip-and-a-jump from downtown Cleveland (three miles to be exact), has quickly become a major hotspot on Thursday nights this summer. Why?
This isn't some lame-sauce excuse of an outdoor happy hour. Every Thursday from 5:30-8:30pm, Edgewater Beach converts into a giant free summer beach party overlooking gorgeous Lake Erie. Known as Edgewater LIVE, the event draws hundreds of people—from young professionals to visiting families and everyone in between.
The booming party is centered around the live bands, which change every week. Some of the more popular bands will include 80s rockers The Breakfast Club (June 9); the hilariously fun 70s band Disco Inferno (June 16); the oh-so-beloved 80s cover band known as The Spazmatics (June 23); the party-centric Neil Diamond tribute The Diamond Project (July 7); 80s hair metal cover band The Sunset Strip featuring Billy Morris (July 14); and a Beatles cover band known as Revolution Pie (July 28). Make sure to bring a beach chair or picnic blanket.
Then, they wash it all down with the important stuff - frosty craft brews and frisky summertime cocktails.
And, kids love the Honey Hut ice cream stand (the chocolate peanut butter is to. die. for.). Okay, we take that back. Everyone loves Honey Hut.
That's not all. Just about every turn on the beach invites you to check out some kind of activity. Beach volleyball is a given, but how about cornhole, too? Many a competitive cornhole matches occur on site (one hand on the bean bag and the other on your beer). The Cleveland Metroparks provides a myriad of discovery activities for children, as well.
New in 2016, visitors can watch a movie right there on the beach under the stars during their cinema series happening June 23, July 28 and Aug. 11.
For those of you don't derive all your zen from a beach and a beer, you'll be able to find your happy place during a free 30-minute outdoor yoga session.
Not happy unless you're moving? Try stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Erie while you're there. The Metroparks works with an on-site SUP company to provide paddleboarding equipment, rentals and tutorials. [You know you've always wanted to give paddleboarding a shot. This is your chance!]
The 900-foot Edgewater Beach and surrounding Lakefront Reservation was acquired by the region's acclaimed park system encircling the city - The Cleveland Metroparks. Much to the glee of locals, the park received a transformative facelift thanks to its new operators.
As a result, this beach and the surrounding park are downright spectacular.
So, celebratory happy hours every Thursday just make sense, right?
We'll cheers to that.
