Popular Band Halestorm Dishes on AP Music Awards

If you're a fan of alternative music, this is probably old news to you: The 2nd Annual Alternative Press Music Awards happen inside Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena on July 22.

But, you probably don't know what's on the mind of some of the performers and attending artists, who'll be in town for the shindig including Weezer, Panic! At The Disco, All Time Low, New Found Glory, Echosmith, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and the hard rock band (and perennial tour-ers) Halestorm.

We sat down with Josh Smith, the bassist for Halestorm to talk about the band's upcoming performance in Cleveland, the city and to get the 411 on some of their upcoming projects.

1. Congratulations on getting the opportunity to perform at the 2015 AP Music Awards here in Cleveland. What are you most looking forward to?

"Just the whole experience. This will be a first for us as a rock band. I don't want to say we're the oddball, but we're honored to be a part of it. It will be really fun.

We're going to do a song with someone else and it's going to be awesome. I don't want to spill the beans. It's very exciting. It's a very cool collaboration.

One band we're label mates that we've never met is Paramore. I hope we get to cross paths with them. I would love to say hi to them.

I couldn't believe the list of bands when I looked at it. It's packed with big-name artists."

2. Halestorm tours a lot - up to 250 destinations in a year. What intrigues you most about a city when visiting?

"We definitely have our go-to places. Usually, there's time to check things out. I try to pick one thing I haven't done in a city and do that and knock it off the checklist for the next time I go through."

3. Halestorm has been to Cleveland a handful of times in the past six years. What do you like about the city?

"Cleveland is a wonderful place to go. It's a mecca for music. It's always a great place to visit. Nearly every time we've been there we've gone to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to see the latest exhibit."

4. Any favorite spots or things you like to do while in town?

"I have this crew of friends in Cleveland. Every time I'm there, my friends pick me up and I do Crossfit. I go to their Crossfit gym and we go out for dinner and drinks.

I have my Cleveland contingency. They're my ambassadors to the area. They take me to cool little areas. We watched the Browns game at a bar last time."

5. You normally play at the House of Blues in Cleveland, right?

"That is such a great club. It's a good downtown spot. The other place is Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica. We have had wonderful shows there. It's such cool scenery. Cleveland has been good to us over the years."

6. What kinds of new projects are you working on right now?

"At this point, it's just touring and touring and we just released out third album, Into the Wildlife, a month ago. We're working on the second single, and it's called "Amen." We're moving along and trying to play in front of as many people as we can and visit as many places as we can.

We're always writing. That never really stops. We're putting ideas in the bank and doing that.

But we're having so much fun out here, chances are we'll be on the road for the next year or two."
