Walk through the Flats East Bank and you’ll find yourself sauntering along a gorgeously designed boardwalk that not only flanks a series of swanky new residences, offices and visitor accommodations, but also the sparkling Cuyahoga River that flows gracefully into Lake Erie. In this new Downtown district, you’ll easily hop between chic cocktail bars, craft breweries, unique local eateries and a swath of outdoor patios energized with the sound of live tunes.
It’s almost impossible to imagine that just five years ago this area of town was home to a few vacant buildings and the remnants of Cleveland’s industrial past. While the Flats East Bank’s successful 180-degree turn didn’t happen overnight (read more here), its massive upgrades are well received by locals and visitors alike.
For tour operators seeking group-tour friendly locations or just a great spot for a visitor dine-around, all while showcasing an invigorated part of Downtown Cleveland, the Flats East Bank is hopping.
Backyard Bocce: With three indoor bocce courts, one outdoor court, arcade games, Skee-ball, firepits and outdoor seating, this place practically screams fun.
Dante’s Inferno: A sleek, new pizzeria opened by local chef Dante Bocuzzi, this restaurant features craft pizzas with toppings like hot dogs, French fries and mustard; and spaghetti and meatballs.
Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville: Chill out, kick up your feet and enjoy some delightful American fare with island flair. It’s happening at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, where they’re experts on hosting group tours.
Alley Cat: Chef Zack Bruell, one of Cleveland’s most prominent culinary forefathers, operates this riverfront oyster bar in the Flats.
Beerhead Bar & Eatery: This place features — literally — hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of craft beer. Enjoy a cold one on the outdoor patio (with a fire pit for those chillier days), at the bar, or with menu items like braised bratwurst and sashimi salad.
The Big Bang Bar: Dueling pianos, side-splitting laughter and hilarious sing-alongs. What could be better?
Coastal Taco: Catch some killer views, sip house margaritas and nosh on craft tacos at the large and inviting Coastal Taco, situated along the Cuyahoga River.
Flip Side Flats: It’s the burgers that are all the rage at this Akron-born eatery. But don’t miss the hand-crafted cocktails, craft beer and milkshakes (made with real apple pie and brownies).
FWD Day + Night: A completely outdoor nightclub with DJs, bands and even a swimming pool. A little bit of Vegas in CLE.
Lago East Bank: Italy meets sleek sophistication meets riverfront views. That’s the scoop at this independent eatery connected to the Aloft Hotel and serving everything from pizza to wagyu.
Magnolia: You know things are going to get a little swanky when a password is required for entry. That’s the case with Magnolia, a secret speakeasy that’s just about the hottest nightclub in town.
Punch Bowl Social: You won’t be at a loss for things to do at Punch Bowl Social, a massive and modern facility featuring arcade games, bowling, billiards and even karaoke. Oh, and did we mention amazing, hand-crafted cocktails (try the punch!) and breakfast, lunch and dinner?
Rascal Flatts Bar & Grill: That amazing country pop trio with hit songs like “Hero,” “What Hurts the Most” and “Easy” is on its way to opening its very first franchise restaurant. No surprise, the restaurant — with a fall/winter 2017 anticipated opening date — will feature a rotating series of live country music acts.
Thirsty Dog Brewing Company: Known for their award-winning beers (aptly named after dogs) like Bourbon Barrel Aged Siberian Night, Berliner Weiss and Old Leghumper, the brewery is set to open a full-scale restaurant and brewing facility in the Flats in the coming year.
The Flats East Bank also is home to a variety of cool events ranging from Flat Out Fridays to the Flats Bacon Fest. Check the events calendar here.
