Ride the Rails for a Scenic Trip

Who says commuting has to be boring? Northeast Ohioans are often traveling between Cleveland and Akron, so if you've got time to kill and a love for nature, there's a better route than I-77.

If you're looking to mix commuting and sightseeing, hop aboard the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR). National Park Scenic coach tickets are all-day passes that allow you a round trip of relaxation through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Fill up for your trip by grabbing breakfast at Yours Truly Rockside in Independence, and then head across the street to the CVSR Rockside Station, park for free and board the train when the announcement is made. Be sure to arrive 30 minutes before departure--that whistle will blow whether you're on board or not.

To make the most of your journey, make stops at the stations along the way and set out to explore the stops on foot.

Historical charm
Peninsula Depot - 45 minutes train ride from Rockside Station

The first stop is the Peninsula Depot. Walk around this historic downtown, and have a Market Garden Progress Pilsner at Winking Lizard while the bartender tells you the history of the former Peninsula Nite Club. In the mood for some art? Enjoy the works of American artists and craftsman at Elements Gallery.

Next, take a stroll through the gorgeous Cuyahoga Valley National Park along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, which winds alongside the Cuyahoga River, through trees and around old abandoned locks.

If you feel like exploring farther afield, rent a bike at Century Cycles and pedal south about 3.5 miles along the Towpath Trail to Szalay's Farm and Market for a snack with a view. We won't judge if you sit on the giant bench swing like a 10-year-old. We do it all the time.

A-K-Rowdy
Akron Northside Station - 45 minutes from Peninsula Depot

Once you get back to the Peninsula Depot, hop on board the CVSR for your next leg of the journey.

You're off to the Akron Northside Station, where you’ll find yourself in the heart of Downtown Akron. Take a walk around the city or jump back on the Towpath Trail for more nature appreciation.

You're nearby Lock 3, home to regular events, festivals, and concerts in the summer, so check that out while you're there. And if you’re craving legit Mexican food and margs, try out Nuevo’s original location on Mill St.

You can also time your visit to catch an Akron Rubber Ducks baseball game, where the Cleveland Indians stars of tomorrow are busy honing their skills before getting the call up to the majors. Finally, if Zippy the kangaroo is your thing, make sure to stop by the University of Akron bookstore at Carroll St. for all of your U of A gear.

Return trip
Rockside Station - 1 hour, 35 minutes from Akron Northside Station

When it’s time to depart, board the train and relax for your scenic ride back home. Chill to your favorite soundtrack, or choose the optional audio tour to learn more about the area.

There are plenty of other opportunities to experience Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway, including dining events, drinking events, Bike Aboard!, and other regular and special events. Click here for more information and to get your ticket.
