Do’s & Don’ts: Bridgestone Invitational
PGA World Golf Championships Returns to Cleveland Region
By Kevin Carpenter
No matter how you slice it - or chip it - golf season is back. The World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational returns to Akron's Firestone Country Club on August 2-5, 2018, marking the 65th anniversary of PGA golf in the Rubber City.
Whether you're the type to hit the links at dawn or simply prefer to catch a round on TV, a weekend at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational is an incredible way to experience PGA golf live and in person.
DO Plan to Stay Awhile
Golf tournaments aren't won or lost on Sundays. The fun actually starts Wednesday. That's when you can watch the pros practice, grab some souvenirs at the Fan Zone or hit the trail for Arnie's March. When the competition tees off for real the next day, all eyes are on the action. When you need a break, scout out the food trucks. Swensons, anyone?
DON'T Miss this Star-Studded Field
Players LOVE this course. Every year, the best of the best - including Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed, and Dustin Johnson - flock to Firestone for a shot at the Bridgestone title. Oh, and Tiger Woods might be back prowling the South Course, too.
Tiger still must qualify for this World Golf Championship event, but desperately wants a chance to hoist the Bridgestone trophy for a record ninth time.
DO Join Arnie's March
On Aug. 1, take a stand against pediatric cancer and rack up a little cardio in the process. March with Arnie's Army (named for the late Arnold Palmer) to raise funds for UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital and Akron Children's Hospital. This cause was dear to Palmer's heart, so why not honor his memory by walking for the cure?
DON'T get stuck in Hall of Fame traffic
Get ready for a huge sports weekend in the Akron-Canton area. On the same day the Invitational begins, the Chicago Bears and Baltimore Ravens hit the gridiron for the 2018 Hall of Fame Game just 15 miles away. Then, on Saturday, the Pro Football HOF enshrines its newest members. Between this and the main event at Firestone, it's basically Christmas for sports fans. Sure, the traffic might get a little crazy - but, really, where else would you rather be?
DO Silence Your Phone
No one wants to hear your marimba ringtone during a critical putt. Especially the golfers. Why not take this opportunity to unplug and enjoy the beautiful Northeast Ohio weather and scenery? But, if the thought of going phone-less gives you the shakes, head over to the designated cell phone area where you can chat away to your heart's content.
DON'T wait to get tickets
Tickets are on sale and going fast. The WGC-Bridgestone Invitational moves to Memphis in 2019 (sniff, sniff), so say goodbye in style with options including daily passes, a family plan, and the all-new ULTRA Club. The latter lives up to its name by offering the ultimate, premium fan experience - complete with upgraded food, drinks and a perfect view of the green at the iconic "Monster" 16th hole.
